Technology Company Maritime Logistics Market Assessment (2016) – Conexbird a North European company that works in the field of industrial logistics retained Wave Point Consulting. The company has developed and patented technology that automates the surveillance of the cargo loading and unloading. The service allows for analysis of every single parcel’s condition, parcel handling forces, parcel placement in the container (or transport unit) and the lashing. If it detects any changes that can harm the goods or container, the Cloud-based service notifies the employee handling the cargo. With 65% of cargo claims related to the container loading transport phase, shippers and insurance companies require better loss prevention methods. Especially, in highly competitive markets where customers’ top supply chain demand is for the product order to be complete, on time and damage free. The adoption and implementation of the firm’s technology generate data for improved decision making by beneficial cargo and container owners, cargo handling depots (both marine and inland), insurance companies, among other supply chain stakeholders. Agricultural Supply Chain & Logistics Project (2015) – Mr. Anderson was a senior consultant for the QGI Consulting led project completed for a confidential client. The objectives were to review supply chain and logistics issues for Canadian and relevant US agricultural product trade flows; Identify the customer’s advantages for both bulk and containerized agricultural products and leveraging them to attract additional export sales volume. Provide an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the existing container and bulk infrastructure in the North American trade corridors used by the client’s customers. The research insights overcome market intelligence obstacles so that containerized and bulk export agricultural product business development and logistics infrastructure investment decisions are aligned with market opportunities.
Pacific Gateway 2.0 Research and Analysis Related to Forest Products Exports (2011) – Mr. Davies led a team including Darryl Anderson of Wave Point Consulting; Brian Zak of All Forest Solutions; and Jean-Francois Arsenault of CPCS Transcom in this trade and logistics study for the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations. Project objectives include identification of current and forecast economic opportunities to respond to increasing global demand for forest products moving from BC and North America and identification and recommendations for actions and strategies to take advantage of these opportunities. This global supply chain study focused on the end-to-end logistics requirements of BC forest producers, including transportation modes, customer needs, decision-makers and distribution within destination countries to increase their market share. As a senior consultant, Mr. Anderson played a key role in gathering information, stakeholder communications, developing the structure and preparation of the ocean freight rate analysis. He also provided expert advice and analysis related to both Interior and Coastal forest products trade & logistics opportunities for the BC industry. Mr. Anderson led in the identification of current and emerging commercial practices of market participants that influence forest products trade flows and distribution decision-making in the respective foreign markets. The end results of the study were used to enhance the efficiency of the logistics and transportation infrastructure with the goal of increasing market share.
Northern Gateway Export Loading & Logistics Study for a West Coast Port (2010) – Business Issue: Darryl Anderson of Wave Point Consulting was a senior consultant for a B2B research project involving an export customer trade and logistics needs and opportunities assessment with the goal of increasing market share. Project tasks included sample selection, in-person and executive telephone interviews, data analysis and the development of client recommendations. Interview instruments captured qualitative and quantitative data for assessing the factors affecting a representative group of current and potential customers (shipping lines, shippers, 3PL/Freight Forwarders, etc.) decision-making criteria for providing service to, or using a specific port. Identification and analysis of key factors influencing container lines’ equipment allocation decisions were also conducted. Client value-added: a more robust understanding of client’s requirements based on global supply chain decision-making criteria. Opportunities for improving customer service through supply chain reconfiguration or the provision of new services were identified. Prioritized export cargo opportunity list to support marketing efforts and infrastructure planning and investments decision-making aligned with trade & logistics market requirements. As a result, loaded TEU container exports through the port more than doubled.
Alberta Petrochemical Transport Study (2009) – Mr. Darryl Anderson of Wave Point Consulting was a principal researcher for the Davies Transportation Consulting Inc. led team. The project that assessed the multi-modal transport competitiveness of actual and potential Alberta liquid and dry petrochemical products to selected North American and off-shore markets. The scope of the project included assembly of qualitative and quantitative information on current Alberta petrochemical production, sales, markets and transportation costs; assessment of port infrastructure requirements and adequacy of existing facilities for port customers; identification and classification of new products by transportation requirements; and a detailed assessment of each element of supply chain costs for Alberta-produced petrochemicals relative to competing producers. Client value-added: Alberta petrochemical producers and government officials had an updated assessment of the performance and effectiveness of their current situation as it pertained to this segment of the energy sector and ways to better align development and investment efforts with commercial opportunities to increase market share.
Strategic Opportunities in the Timber Trade (2006) – Mr. Darryl Anderson was the executive author of a trade and logistics report that assessed the business development and growth opportunities arising from the changing ownership structure of the coastal forest industry. Business Issue: the report included an analysis of domestic, US and international market conditions, regulatory policies and port authorities infrastructure, pricing and logistics considerations. The report identified ways to ensure increase competitiveness and fairness for forest products manufacturers to remain globally competitive. Client value added: introduced a revised pricing and land use strategy that increased the level of competition in local log transport markets and increased business for the port authority. As a result, deep-sea shipping traffic increased by over 50%.
Surface Transportation Annual Review (2014 & 2015) – Wave Point Consulting teamed up with BC Shipping News to initiate the annual Surface Transportation Annual Review (STAR) Survey. Business Issues: respondents were asked for their opinion on three topics to gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of the logistics and transport sector in response to global supply chain challenges:

Cool and Refrigerated Cargoes (2010) – As an independent researcher, Mr. Anderson co-wrote the terms of reference, developed study methodology and completed this trade and logistics report that identified key issues that were shaping the performance of the sector participants. Business Issue: the objective of the report was to ascertain whether conflicting pressures and trends spell prosperity or difficulty for the future maritime transport of perishables cargoes. The report describes the composition of cool cargoes, shipping routes and methods of maritime transport. The structure of the cool cargo transport industry was reviewed. The analysis covered the supply, demand, maritime transport options and competition. Regulatory issues that affect the reefer/refrigerated shipping industry were also assessed. Client value-added: conclusions on the composition and structure of the maritime transportation of cool cargoes – reefers and refrigerated shipping – and their implications for Canada’s international trade in perishable goods were presented.
DOMESTIC SUPPLY CHAIN AND MARKET ANALYSIS
Regional Shipping and Logistics Analysis (2017) – Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is aware of issues related to transportation and shipping of goods in and out of the region as well as within the economic corridors. The issues of cost, logistics, reliability, and availability, create significant barriers for business and have an adverse impact on business growth and development, and in some areas business retention. Thus, the CBT commissioned a project to assess regional logistics infrastructure and services and explore options for improvements. The scope of the project includes analysis of the shipping and logistics infrastructure in the Basin; identification of constraints and challenges to efficient operations; and assessment of impacts. The study will also provide recommendations on potential actions and the role of the Trust in improving regional logistics to enhance business growth and investment in the region. A consulting team is led by Philip Davies of Davies Transportation Consulting Inc. has been engaged by the Trust to conduct the study. Other members of the consulting team include Darryl Anderson of Wave Point Consulting Ltd. and Steve Hayto of S5 Services.
Grain Transportation Options for BC (2015) – The Wave Point Consulting Ltd. team was retained by a confidential client to review and develop effective transportation options to facilitate the transfer of grain from Northeast British Columbia (Peace Region) to the Fraser Valley. In addition to the use of existing literature and secondary data sources, the project team consulted with government ministries and stakeholders. The team used a mix of qualitative and quantitative methodologies including the development of a logistics cost model that reflects transport and handling costs for a select number of origin and destination pairs giving consideration to road and rail transport or combinations thereof. Information gathered during stakeholder interviews was analyzed to select the candidate origin/destination pairs. Selection of the origin/destination pairs that were modeled occurred after input from the client and consideration of the interconnected highway and rail network that serves both British Columbia and Alberta in the Peace Region and the Fraser Valley. The cost analysis includes review and discussion of the implications of any capital costs required for major infrastructure investments.
Liquefied Natural Gas Value & Supply Chain Project (2014) – Business Issue: the confidential client engaged the Wave Point Consulting team to assist with this transportation and logistics infrastructure project arising from British Columbia’s emerging liquefied natural gas (LNG) export opportunities. The supply chain analysis included key aspects of the proposed BC LNG projects starting with natural gas exploration and extraction, through to production, processing, transportation and distribution of the final product. The report identifies each of the key supply chain areas and identifies the employment and supplier opportunities for communities along the northern BC LNG corridor, as well as Aboriginal people and vendors in other parts of the province.
Central & Northern Vancouver Island Marine Fuelling Supply Report (2009/10) – Mr. Darryl Anderson, Managing Director Wave Point Consulting, led a study of marine fuelling. Team members included Phil Davies as a senior consultant. Business Issue: the purpose of the study was to evaluate marine fuelling supply chain options in the geographic areas of Central and Northern Vancouver Island. The Wave Point Consulting Ltd. team interviewed major suppliers of marine fuel at coastal harbours to identify and profile existing company, franchise or independent operations, gather information on past service reductions and plans, and identify economic regulatory and environmental issues affecting fuel suppliers to marine consumers. The information collected by direct personal contact was supplemented by secondary data sources from fuel industry suppliers, trade media and other public data sources such as coastal community contacts, fuelling distributors, and others to identify the target list of marine fuel facilities. Direct telephone calls, electronic communications or in person interviews were used to contact some marine fuelling facility operators to very data and gather information on local issues. Client value-added: a complete understanding of marine fuelling options so that potential supply chains solutions and infrastructure investment decisions can address both customers needs and minimize the liability of the Harbour Authorities and the Crown.
